It's hot, but is it pop?

Many of us listened to the mega-popularized metal bands of the late eighties. We packed their shows, bought their t-shirts, and cranked their music. Well it’s no big surprise to this writer that little has changed in the world of heavy music. Road Runner Records plays host to a diverse crew of musicians, including established acts like Type-O Negative, Sepultura, and The Misfits. Roadrunner also features powerful newcomers like Iowa’s Slipknot (whose debut album sold 15,000 copies in it’s first week--no doubt thanks to their second-stage slot on the summer ’99 Ozzfest tour) and Coal Chamber, who feature Ozzy Osbourne himself on their cover of Peter Gabriel’s “Shock the Monkey." With a recent MTV promotion featuring “New Metal” like Static X and the aforementioned Coal Chamber, I believe that this popularity is no flash in the pan for heavy music--expect to see these and many other new bands on the new-release shelf for quite some time.
