Tests Begin on Drugs to Prevent Breast Cancer

According to American Medical News, www.ama-assn.org.amnews , twenty-two thousand women, over $100 million dollars, and ten years of research will be assigned to a study coordinated by the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project on the pharmaceutical prevention of breast cancer. Two drugs will be studied for their ability to prevent the development of the cancer: tamoxifen, which cut the rate of breast cancer among at-risk women by 49%, and raloxifene, a drug the FDA approved for the treatment of osteoporosis with a side effect of reducing the rate of breast cancer. Though the study is planned for a ten-year period, results that the investigators determine to be clinically significant will be published along the way.
