Shelter dog "Bernie" gets new career

The experience of an animal shelter dog named "Bernie," a black flat-coated retriever, is opening the door to new careers for discarded dogs. For decades, organizations have focused on carefully bred and raised puppies for assistance or service dogs. These are the remarkable canines that help disabled people to lead more independent lives. Spoke N' Paws Assistance Dogs has begun an effort to also train shelter dogs to fulfill this purpose. Bernie's positive example is quite promising for both shelter dogs who qualify and for those who need them.
