Top » Fashion & StyleA fashion legend: HalstonSite: http://www.salon.com/people/feature/1999/09/17/halston/index.htmThose of us who admit to being old enough to remember the 1970s no doubt know Halston. This purveyor of American sportswear chic developed an aestheic that is, according to Carina Chocano in an article from Salon.com, reflected in contemporary works by Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, and Narciso Rodriguez. Chocano christens Halston "the first international fashion superstar"; he was often found at Studio 54, flanked by a phalanx of high-style devotees including Jackie O, Liz Taylor, and Liza Minelli. Yet despite his massive success, Halston's story as told here is tinged with tragedy. The article focuses on the rise and fall of his company, which grew bloated and out-of-control with too many ill-advised licensing deals. By the time his death in 1990, Halston's name had "turned into a brand to which [the designer had] become a slave." Check out this disheartening tale, then browse the gallery of photographs from Halston's seminal career. Tue, 16 Nov 1999 13:35:03 -0800
