MP3.com To Give $200K To Its Top Artists

The 31,000 mainly undiscovered artists on the MP3.com site will compete for their cut of $200,000. Unlike the standard revenue-sharing model, "Payback for Playback" doesn't depend on CD sales, but draws its funds from the company's promotional budget. This temporary promotion by MP3.com could seal the fate of many up-and-coming MP3 distribution sites. Is it good for the bands? Time will tell. Does it make using the MP3.com website easier? Hardly. Hmmm ... $200,000/31,000 bands = $6.45.
