THE INTERNET PUBLIC LIBRARY

Site: http://www.ipl.org

For hundreds of years, librarians have strived to organize the world of literature so that it's easier for people to find and use materials. The Internet adds an exciting new dimension to this mission: universal accesibility. With this newfound freedom has come quite a bit of confusion and information overload. The Internet Public Library site attempts to address that problem, allowing visitors to "take out books" (link to sites) directly from its online card catalog, subdivided by category. The vast site provides the structure, searchability and availability of texts that have kept many lovers of literature in their neighborhood libraries and off of the World Wide Web. One particularly exciting aspect of this site is its Youth Division, which makes it fun and exciting for kids to explore the world of books, while introducing them to the wonders of the Internet.
