According to this New York Times article by Gretchen Morgenson, online brokerage firms are like hot rods without seatbealts or rules of the road. These firms offer "fast and cheap access to stock market investors every trading day." Regulators would like to see more online trading accountability. Therefore, in an attempt to bring some order into the business, investigative reports were issued by the SEC and the office of the NY state attorney general.
