Rodney Dangerfields of the Investment World?

In this recent Chicago Tribune business section feature article, author Kathy Bergen says the retirement-savings tools known as variable annuities have long been regarded as the "Rodney Dangerfields of the investment world"--they have gained little respect from many financial counselors. Variable annuities have high costs compared to mutual funds and they carry several tax disadvantages. Bergen says that there are now a number of organizations which are launching lower-cost variable annuities, or trimming costs on existing ones.
