Top » Entertainment: Moviesdigital filmmaking: revolution or hype?Site: http://www.nytimes.com/library/tech/99/11/biztech/articles/19digSince the advent of film in the early twentieth century, movie makers' creativity has been hemmed in by technology: film magazines that allowed only 10 minutes of continuous shooting; large, clunky cameras; and the need for pricey, time-consuming editing and sound mixing. Digital technology, however, holds the promise to change all that, by freeing filmmakers from the contraints of physical film and greatly simplifying the editing and distribution process. This recent New York Times article uses a profile of director Mike Figgis' recent foray into digital movie production as a entry-point for a discussion of the revolutionary potential of this technological sea change. Is digital filmmaking just another overhyped gimmick (think 3-D) or a development on the level of the introduction of sound in movies? This piece will give you some food for thought.
