The History of Newcomb pottery

Site: http://www.tulane.edu/~wc/pottery

Easily one of the most important American art potteries of the early twentieth century, Newcomb pottery was an outgrowth of a progressive vocational program at Newcomb Memorial College. The project originated as a way of teaching young women both business skills and fine arts, and between 1894 and 1940, the studio produced more than 70,000 pieces of beautiful (and eventually, extremely valuable) pottery styled in the vein of the Arts and Crafts movement. This site does an excellent job at explaining the history of the pottery--including characteristic markings, colors, and even advertisements--as well as that of the the three women who were Newcomb's principle designers. Sadly, there aren't as many color photos of the pottery as this editor would like to see, but hopefully a perusal of the site's link page will prove rewarding for interested visitors.
