Turn Back Time at Retrosheet

Nothing thrills a baseball fan more than cracking open the daily paper to read over the previous day's boxscores. But what if you wanted a capsule recap, not of yesterday's Yankee-Re Sox game, but of one played in 1983? You'd have nowhere to go if it wasn't for Retrosheet. This site was created, its designers inform us, "for the purpose of computerizing play-by-play accounts of as many pre-1984 major league games as possible." You should be warned, accessing the information here can be tricky, especially if you have little computer experience. The site provides DOS-based data files that are then read by an array of freeware tools you can download. There are detailed instructions on what to do, however, and once you put it all together you should have no trouble determining say, who relieved Jim Palmer in the eighth inning of an Orioles-Twins game you attended with your camp group in 1979.
