Top » TelecommunicationsLong Distance for Free?Site: http://cnn.com/TECH/computing/9811/11/longfree.idgThe Aplio/Phone, a small black box containing a modem, voice converter and a speaker, allows people "to talk over the Internet" for much less than what long-distance companies charge. To use this handy plug-and-play device, users press a button on Aplio/Phone and hang up. Once Aplio has established a connection with the Internet, it calls up both you and the person you're calling. There is a slight delay between when you speak and when the other caller hears your voice, so if you're not too picky, this device may be the answer to lower long distance. For the rest of us, who are doing good to hear over a conventional phone line, we are still waiting for technology to connect us to the world for free. Wed, 08 Dec 1999 04:38:12 -0800
