Free advice from Don Vandervort

HGTV's Don Vandervort has a handy website for all kinds of fixer-upper-type projects. True, parts of the site are dedicated to advertising for-fee materials, but don't let that deter you from checking out the many tips, articles, and resources available for free. Your first stop will probably be the (surprise!) "Free Advice" section, which includes dozens of tips for improving and maintaining all aspects of your home, from dishwashers to decks. "Do It Yourself" features detailed articles on more daunting projects (like taking care of your septic tank). My favorite section, "How Your House Works," contains excellently drawn and detailed diagrams with accompanying text that explains all the different "systems" that, when put together, make a house work--it's worth visiting Home Tips for this resource alone.
