Don't Waste a Drop

Even here in the north, water use in the landscape has become an important issue...and for those areas of the country that have experienced drought in recent years, wise water-use practices have become mandatory. This article, from M.A. Powell at the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, explains how we should design our landscapes for the efficient use of water. Of primary importance is determining the use areas of the landscape and resulting water-use zones. Only after the water-use plan has been formulated is the plant selection process initiated, and plant choice and placement is determined by the water-use plan. This article is an excellent introduction to water conservation in the landscape, and also provides some good general design tips.
