The Fragrance Foundation's beautiful new website features this interesting article about noses--not the kind on your face, but the kind that works for major fragrance companies. Otherwise known as perfumers, noses are highly trained in the art of differentiating between the hundreds of different aromatic chemicals that are used to produce the evocative scents which, for many people, are the reminders of special occasions, places, and loved ones. Some people have a hard time smelling the difference between lilacs and lavender, but noses can tell whether a particular type of vanilla comes from Mexico or Madagascar. This is a well-done article about one of the cosmetic industry's most demanding professions--you'll never think of perfume the same way again!
