Respecting lesbians and gays in schools

Site: http://www.glstn.org

Did you know that, on average, high school students hear anti-gay epithets 25 times a day, and that 97% of the time teachers hearing these epithets fail to respond? This fact is just one reason that the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) created BlackBoard On-line. This site reflects their mission to assure that each member of every school community is valued and respected, regardless of sexual orientation. It is chock full of current news items, fact sheets, and newsletters directly related to education issues and anti-gay bias in schools. (Note: you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view some of these - available as a free download at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html). The site offers a calendar of upcoming events, a resource library with school and community tools, and information on GLSEN chapters. One of the most informative (and entertaining) sections is the People area, which highlighting students, educators, parents, straight allies, and concerned citizens active in advancing gay rights. A must for concerned educators (and students) everywhere.
