Under pressure from the wine and liquor distribution industry, many states in the U.S. have made it a criminal offense for consumers to purchase wine direct from out-of-state wineries and wine merchants via mail, phone or the Internet. Free the Grapes, a non-profit advocacy organization established by a consortium of wineries and wine organizations, has a comprehensive website detailing this situation and suggesting ways that consumers can oppose it.
