That is, until you look at Phil Petrie's thorough article which covers the development of gospel music, from Thomas Dorsey's famous work with Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey in the early part of the century, to the tremendously popular songs of Bebe and Cece Winans. If reading the backgrounds of the inspiring soloists, influential quartets, and electrifying choirs that have helped shape the growth of this dynamic genre doesn't get you in the spirit, I don't know what will!
