Logs are not always what they seem

When we look to keeping our websites and servers secure, we often use log files to detect any intrusion or misuse of our resources. However, logs are not always telling the full story. One case in point is the new wave of anonymous surfing sites. Altaveesta.com is one of the popular ones. When someone visits your site from altaveesta.com or any of the other servies, they are actually using those sites as a proxy of sorts. Therefore, you will see the IP address of the service and have no idea where the person was actually originating. This is a fact worth knowing before you look at your log files and notice high usage from one set of IPs.
