The Berger Collection of English Art

Financial expert William Berger, whose success with establishing and operating mutual funds brought him a considerable fortune, retired in 1994, after which he spent three years and most of his fortune in building a collection of English art. Berger, who died on June 29, 1999, at age 73 in his hometown of Denver, Colorado, had placed his collection on loan to the Denver Art Museum in 1998. He never disclosed the cost of purchasing some 200 paintings and objects spanning more than 600 years of British history. However, art experts have estimated that he spent about $25 million.
