Know Your Septic Tank

Site: http://www.howstuffworks.com/sewer.htm

If you've ever stared down into the swirling vortex of your toilet and wondered what happens next, then this informative page from the "How Stuff Works" website should answer all your questions. It should also provide the base of knowledge you'll need should you ever have to repair your home's septic system. Skip the section entitled "Why do we need a sewer system?" We all know the answer to that one--and let's face it, it ain't pleasant. Go right to the section on private septic tanks for an enlightening discussion on P-traps, drain fields, and the difference between the "scum layer" and the "sludge layer." (Again, this is something not all of us want to know.) The section on urban wastewater treatment will interest only those looking to make this a career. But at the end of it, you'll find helpful links that will enable you to use and maintain your septic tank safely and effectively. I give this site a "number two" on the rating scale, if you know what I mean.
