Prior to sound recording, preservation of folk tunes was not easy. Nor was it accurate. But in the 1930's came the capacity to capture and reproduce the nuances and variations that written records could not carry. Two notable efforts to archive folk music are now being made available to the general public in the form of "reissued" music collections. In this intriguing Allmusic.com article by Michael Simmons, the focus is on these collections and those responsible for them, Alan Lomax and Harry Smith. Even if you're not interested in the collections, the magnitude of the effort by Lomax and Smith is one to appreciate.
