Indian beauty queens

Within the past 5 years, India has emerged as a leader in producing the world's beauties. Yukta Mookhey, recently crowned Miss World, is the third Indian woman in the past 5 years to "bag the coveted title," and in 1994, Sushimita Sen captured the Miss Universe tiara. This likely has the South Americans incensed, as they seem to have been overthrown, or at least are now up against formidible competition. The lowdown on today's pagentry is that beauty queens are largely "made"; as this Salon article points out, preparation behind the scenes is anything but passive. This takes little away from the accomplishment of the winners; all that poking and prodding must require a lot of patience!
