More Women on the Playing Field

Maybe it's Brandi Chastian's triumphant show of the sports bra. Maybe it's the increased attention the media is giving to women's sports. Maybe it's Title IX (the law that equalizes money spent on men's and women's sports in schools). Whatever the reason, women's sports are gaining ground. According to a NCAA report detailed here on SportsForWomen.com, overall participation in women's college sports rose 3.5 percent in 1997-98 from the previous season. Participation in men's college sports rose only 0.24 percent. The fastest-growing women's sport? Soccer, whose growth has been fueled by the highly publicized U.S. Women's Soccer Team's Olympic gold medal in 1996 and World Cup wins in 1991 and 1999. You go girl.
