Tanning Beds: One Bedtime to Skip

January, February, and March are peak times for tanning salon use, according to tanning industry people. Women want to color-up pale skin, or get ready for winter vacation sun exposure. And increasingly, there's the perception that tanning beds are safer than sun. Not so, say physicians at the Mayo Clinic. Tanning booths are as unsafe as sunlight, emitting high doses of UVA, the ultraviolet light that damages the immune system and causes melanoma. Mayo's warning: "Avoid tanning salons. They are not safe. There is no such thing as a healthy tan."
