The Exploratorium

Site: http://www.exploratorium.edu

The Exploratorium bills itself as a museum of science, art, and human perception. It is (of course) both a real place (in San Francisco) and a cyberplace on the Web. This is one of the oldest science-museum websites around (1993). The Exploratorium folks do things right: it's not just the quantity (over 10,000 web pages), but the care that the creation of those pages entails. The Exploratorium is interested in getting people interested in science, not in showing off internet technology. They are very aware that visitors are not all equipped with the fasted machines or the latest browsers. I visited a page on designer snow crystals--cool! Everything you need to know about this topic is here, including directions on how to take pictures of snow crystals. There's great history on the topic as well, from Kepler's first paper on the snowflake (1611) to Wilson A. Bentley's 5,000-snowflake catalog published in 1931. Great site!
