Black hat hacker

Talk about every e-tailer's (not to mention e-consumer's) nightmare! The authorities are in hot pursuit of "Maxim" (a.k.a. Maxus, or Pi2000), an extortionist who claims to be located in Russia. He has hacked into CD Universe's database and stolen what has been estimated to be the credit card information of 300,000 customers. CD Universe did not pay him the $100,000 he demanded, and so he carried out his threat to dispense the credit cards via an illegal website. This incident is putting the spotlight on the Clinton administration's efforts to combat cybertheft and other Internet-related crime. The NY Times article briefly discusses the new initiatives that are in the works.
