Top » Music: JazzEssential JazzSite: http://astro.nmsu.edu/~mmarley/Jazz.htmlAs a relative newcomer to the world of jazz, I have been searching for a good, basic guide to essential recordings in the genre. With this website, I may just have found it. Sure, it links you from the listed CDs to their order page at CD Now, but the commerical aspect of the site never gets in the way of the editorial. Webmaster Jim Determan really knows his stuff. He lists a dozen or so must-have recordings for each sub-genre, from ragtime to modern to fusion and free jazz, with up to a paragraph or so of commentary for selected entries. Now I know if I want to start a Dave Brubeck collection, his "Time Out" CD is a good place to start. With Determan's guidance, I may be a dedicated jazzbo by the end of the year!
