The diva holds a special place in gay men's history. The worship of Judy Garland, for example, was once so intense that it gave rise to the code term "friend of Dorothy"; the heightened emotions brought about by Garland's death were also thought to have been a major impetus for the Stonewall Rebellion in 1969. But are the days of diva worship waning? According to Salon's Damien Cave, they may be. Although some female entertainers still draw an enthusiastic legion of gay male followers, Cave claims that more and more men are turning to the worlds of business and politics to find their idols--or simply abandoning rabid fandom altogether.
