minority gay men and aids: a disturbing report

Site: http://www.nytimes.com/library/national/science/aids/011400hth-a

This article left me a bit rattled. The New York Times reported that in 1998 (the most recent year that statistics are available), a greater number of African-American and Hispanic gay men than white gay men were diagnosed with AIDS. More and more, the disease is becoming one predominantly of black and Latino men in the U.S. The article's author, Lawrence K. Altman, points to several reasons for this disturbing trend; among them is a strong anti-gay bias in many African-American and Hispanic communities which stymies organizational and outreach efforts. With so much press given lately to the successes of new drug therapies, this piece is a potent reminder that we've got a long way to go until we see the end of this epidemic.
