Confucious say, "People have to know where website is to visit it." http://www.did-it.com/detective.htm offers a useful, free service for assessing where (or if!) your site appears in the rankings of the Top 10 Search Engines (these 10 were chosen by did-it.com, so you may disagree). You enter the URL of your site and the search terms you expect surfers to use to find your site. Results will show where your site stands in each search engine under each search term - but if your site appears lower than 30th position, you will just receive a blanket ">30" statistic. A nice touch is that it will automatically e-mail you reports month-by-month about how your site is performing, so if you make changes designed to improve your site's ranking, you can see if they've worked. This site is perhaps more useful for the issues it makes you think about than the results that come back.
