FCC Approves NeuStar, Inc. as NANPA Administrator

Site: http://nanpa.com

The complexity of the job of the North American Number Plan Administrator (NANPA), has grown tremendously since Bell Communications Research (Bellcore) assumed the role in 1983 after the breakup of AT&T. Subsequent to Bellcore, Lockheed Martin took the helm as the neutral third-party administrator. Now, following the FCC's approval November 17, 1999, of the transfer of Lockheed Martin's Communication Industry Services (CIS) division, the administrator of the NANPA and Local Number Portability (LNPA) for the telecommunications industry is NeuStar, Inc. NeuStar is the sole administrator of all area codes and central office codes (or exchanges) in North America, and also administers area code relief activities, number pooling and other actions to relieve exhaust of available telephone numbers. This site provides invaluable information about the administration of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), including the Public Switched Telephone Network in the United States and its territories, Canada, Bermuda, and many Caribbean nations.
