Instruction in Jazz Improv

Site: http://www.outsideshore.com/primer/primer/index.html

One of the great things about the Internet is the way it functions as a teaching tool. And so cost-effectively to boot! Take this site for instance. It offers a freely browsable, complete online text of Marc Sabatella's Jazz Improvisation Primer. A print version would set you back $15.95, but I like this version better, because I can peruse it in chunks on my lunch break and I don't have to lug a whole book around with me. The text offers a brief history of jazz, with separate sections covering various styles, then moves on to fundamental concepts, chord/scale relationships, and applied theory. No illustrations or fancy sound files here, just straight text, geared toward the aspiring musician. I found the instruction on walking bass lines especially scintillating. I hope you will, too.
