U.S. government websites are perhaps not the first port of call for most of us when researching home improvements. This site, however, is well worth a visit. In a "no frills" kind of way (if I may say so) it delivers all the salient points we should consider when undertaking home improvements. There are tips on how to complain, hiring a contractor, checking references, understanding your payment options and avoiding getting "nailed." There are also a few useful links on remodelling. Even though I'm from the UK, I still found the tips useful; most of the advice "travels well," no matter where you live. Enjoy!
