A survey of roma music

Site: http://www.rootsworld.com/rw/feature/gipsy.html

There's much more to gypsy music than old chestnuts like "Volare" and other tunes by the ever-present Gipsy Kings. True, the Kings have served as effective ambassadors for this flamboyant genre--but they utterly fail to convey the incredible diversity of gypsy music, which stretches across the Eurasian continent from Russia down to Egypt to Turkey to France. This web page from Roots World is an excellent springboard for anyone looking to explore these lusty and lustrous songs. Alas, there's only one sound file on this page, but you will be able to read reviews of a number of different albums and groups; links are also provided to articles about Roma legends Yuri Yunakov and Nicolas Reyes. Check it out, and add some names to your music wish list--its a great way to learn a bit more about an ancient and extremely influential music culture.
