X Marks the Spot

Curious about OS X, the tenth Roman-numeralled update of the Macintosh operating system. Even if you couldn't attend the recent MacWorld convention, where Apple CEO Steve Jobs outlined some its features, you can still get a heads-up from this Knight Ridder News Service report. The usual gewgaws that come with any operating system upgrade are present here as well, such as the "dock," an area at the bottom of the screen that replaces the pop-up windows of OS 9. And in keeping with the Mac's emphasis on aesthetics, the article reports that all on-screen buttons, sliders and other navigational images on the desktop will have a "translucent watery quality." Cool! An aquamarine desktop will look groovy on my fuschia iMac!
