Goodness Wins
Ivan Noble was a BBC journalist diagnosed with brain cancer a couple of years ago. His monthly column documenting his condition is, in many ways, unremarkable.
He writes mainly about the process of fighting cancer. As a Brit and a technology writer he may be excused from existential musings. But what makes him unusual is the ordinary way he lived during his ordeal. He continued to write. He married his girlfriend and a year later they had a child: ordinary things for most of us. But these are remarkable celebrations of life for someone so ill. No less courageous was his partner. Imagine volunteering to be a single parent.
I’m constantly amazed at the depth of human depravity, we see pain and suffering caused by others all over. But every now and then when the human spirit soars we witness nobility. We’re inspiring when we’re selfless. I could go on about the struggle between evil and good, they’ve been around along time. Save to say that it’s worth noticing when goodness has an occasional victory.
