Cristo’s Art Saves Dogs
As I wondered around Central Park under yards and yards of orange, sorry saffron, colored fabric my New York cynism kicked in. I wondered whether this hooplah was worth the $20 million tab. My curiousity turn to disdain on seeing dozens of uniformed attendants carrying poles with tennis balls. Their role it appears was not to joust but to unfurl tangled drapes. They were paid the minimum wage but even at that poultry rate it seemed like an exercise in excess.
But I’m happy to say I was wrong.
The New York Times reportsthat a couple of frisky dogs, seemingly more impressed by a pond in the park than by Cristo’s gates, ran onto the thin ice and fell into the freezing water. Surrounded by ice, there was no way out. An attendant appeared and rescued them using his pole to cut a path to shore.
I have now become a confirmed art lover. Saving a couple of dogs from a watery grave is easily worth $20 million.
