Soccer’s Conundrum
Here’s soccer’s version of the old existential question, “if a tree falls in a forrest but no one hears it does it still make a noise?”
Champion League games are played by Europe’s best teams on a home and away basis. Because home field is a huge advantage away goals are doubled. This encourages the visiting team to score rather than play a boring defensive game. So, if the score is tied after both games, say 2:2 but one of team A’s goals was scored away, then it wins.
But what’s the call if team A’s away goal was scored, accidentally, by team B?
OK, to make it easy here’s a multiple choice:
(a) A goal is a goal. Team A wins.
(b) The goal was not scored by team A. It counts but not double, the game is tied.
(c) The clumsy clod who scored is shot.
