The Gates in Central Park, a big NOTHING

Are Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s “The Gates,” in Central Park, a big fat nothing? That seems to be the suggestion of an article in the New Yorker, by Peter Schjeldahl. I admit, it is difficult for a cynical New Yorker to appreciate the hoopla. However, if the event does in fact bring in millions of dollars in tourist money which will then trickle down through the economy making my next year’s tax burden lighter, I’m all for it. If the money made by the Central Park Conservancy on the sale of commemorative wrist watches, tote bags, T-shirts and scarves results in the path around the park paved more frequently for my rollerblading and cycling, I’m ecstatic.

  1. Bernard Lee Says:

Hurrahs are warranted for the cheerful atmosphere The Gates
bestowed on Central Park. Inviting markers were they, wending their way through that most wonderful of settings, a respite
from the hustle and bustle of New York City. Indeed, the color
was heartwarming for an alum of Syracuse University. Thank you, I say, for such good taste.
