My Seat at the Oscars

Did you notice a couple of empty seats at last night’s Academy Awards? Well, they were mine.

A dear friend with Hollywood connections arranged to get me into the Kodak Auditorium. But last minute something came up and I could not go. That’s not 100% true. It’s more like I had a conflict. Yesterday was the last chance to see Christo’s “shmata” exhibition in Central Park. I had heard that it was a spectacular not to be missed event. So I had to decide between two artistic happenings at opposite ends of the country. In Los Angeles I’d see multi-colored fabrics on celebrity frames while New York displayed orange material on metal frames.

Deciding was tough as both exhibitions seemed a bit silly. But I stayed in New York because the “Gates” were not compelled to talk about their outfits and explain how wonderful it was to work with the designer. Judging from the number of empty seats at the Oscars others also felt that sometimes metal frames are preferable to celebrity bodies.
